Is a tropical medicinal plant from Apiaceae family native to Southeast Asian countries such as India, Sri Lanka, China, Indonesia, and Malaysia as well as South Africa and Madagascar.
It is one of the chief herbs for treating skin problems, to heal wounds, and for revitalizing the nerves and brain cells, hence primarily known as a “Brain food” in India, and many ailments in the body.
It is said to develop the crown chakra which is the energy center at the top of the head and to balance the right and left hemispheres of the brain, which the leaf is said to resemble. It is considered as brain tonic due to its wide beneficial neuroprotective activity.
It is a reputed plant species for its traditional use in ayurvedic and Chinese medicines and its positive effects on brain aging have been generally attributed to its two major triterpene saponosides; asiatic and madecassic acids as well as their heterosides; asiaticoside and madecassoside, respectively.
